Europro Montrose Golf Links Eagle Orchid Scottish Masters
Round 1
A new challenge awaited me as I headed up to Montrose in Scotland for a taste of the links. My track record of Links golf quite frankly is appalling but I was excited about the test that lay before me.
As expected being right by the coast it was a windy morning but a couple of pars started my day off nicely. An unlucky iron shot span back off the green at the third hole costing me a bogey but I bounced straight back with a birdie at the fourth hole.
A sliced tee shot onto the beach at 6 costs me a double bogey and a bogey at the short 8th after a miscalculation with my wedge saw me reach the turn at +3. A steadier but more boring back 9 took place after an eventful front 9. A birdie at the tenth steadied the ship and 8 straight pars finished off a respectable score of 73 +2 but I was relatively happy about my days work.
Round 2
A couple under on round 2 would see me make the cut but after a poor bogey to start it was going to be an uphill battle from the very beginning.
In typical fashion I never give up and I birdied 5, 6 and 7 to get back to level for the tournament and what appeared to be perhaps on the cut line or one away.
A dropped shot on the 11th which was playing brutal into the wind saw me drop to +1 for the tournament. The wind and the rain gathered up on the back 9 and I struggled to cope with it and finished poorly.
I was still chasing birdies when realistically in poor conditions you would normally try to make pars. Bogies at 14, 15 and 16 and a double bogey at 18 crushed any hopes I had of making the cut. Even a birdie at 17 wasnt enough to cheer me up as I knew my poor finish had cost me making the cut this week.
I signed for a +3 74 and finished +5 for the tournament.
