Geographically speaking, a close tournament for me this week, Caversham Heath only about a one hour drive from home, so not too far to travel for a change.
Day 1
and a nice early tee time to get me underway
A great start as I followed three opening pars with birdies on the 4th & 6th holes, a couple of dropped shots to follow, but I was through 9 holes in 37, level par
Onto the back and bogeys on the 10th and 13th set me back a little until I made a great birdie on the 15th to get back to one over par
A bogey to follow on 18 and day one had finished with me on 75 +2 for the day
Day 2
I thought to myself the cut line would be -2 which left me the target of -4 to make the final days play
Could not have started better as I made birdie on my very first hole. A bogey to follow but back to back birdies before another dropped shot on the 7th and I was through the front nine in 36 -1 under par
Onto the back nine and a quick birdie on 10 before another on 14 and now I was -3 for the day but still needed one more.
Two superb shots and I was on the par 5 15th green, two putts later and I had got myself to my target of -4
A long drive up 16 left just a wedge into the green, I hit a solid wedge but it just wouldn’t hold the green and rolled through the back and into a bunker
I failed to get up and down and dropped a shot back to -3, then disaster on 17 as my tee shot found the water and double bogey followed and my race was run, cut missed.
I was really gutted after getting to -4 then my finish just let me down
Hopefully I’ll be able to take the positives out of this and learn from my experience and avoid the same in the future. It’s still a learning curve.
As always, enjoy your golf
Until next time
Matt
